Five Tips to Keep Your Business Current

When was the last time you recommended to your employees that they take some time during the day to “learn” and to think differently? To take some time to figure a better way, a new way. To think out of the box. This is the conundrum facing most businesses today.

Businesses are so busy just trying to be the best day-to-day that there is little to no commitment to “reaching for more” and investing in the time to find new. We all know that to stay the same is the equivalent of a slow death. With innovation moving faster than a blink of an eye, it is essential for businesses to commit to “new” ideas, products, services and establish efficient and more creative ways to do business. Just ask a newspaper ad salesperson or someone who works for a printer or someone who worked at Polaroid. Speed is speed and it is here to stay.

In our business, there isn’t a year that goes by that we aren’t feeling like we belong in college again. It’s the commitment to our industry. Learn, learn and learn… stay current. Don’t fool yourself. Even if you are in a “slow moving” industry, trust me, there is someone out there searching for a new way to revolutionize a piece of what you do.

Here are five tips to making sure you stay on top of your game in your industry. Trust me, there is a payoff to being forward thinking.

1. Identify three to five bloggers that have a grasp on your industry. If you don’t know of any, ask around or search Google to find the best sources. Follow these bloggers.
2. Commit to 15-30 minutes a day to actually read the blogs of the folks you are following.
3. Start your own company blog. If you read something that is interesting, most likely your customers are also going to find it interesting. Re-purpose what you find and add your own personal spin as it relates to your industry. For writing the blog, do not commit to more than you can bite off. For example, if you think that once a month is all you can operationally manage, don’t commit to more than that. As you get better at blogging, you may decide that you can do it more frequently.
4. Share what you find with your employees. By sharing your interesting finds, this will encourage them to find interesting information too.
5. Share the information that you read in client meetings. All clients love to hear “what’s new” in the industry. They love it when someone does their work for them. Incorporate the information and new ideas you find into your presentations.

Following these tips will surely make a difference in your ongoing learning and sharing curve. There is no teacher standing over your head anymore pushing you to learn more. It is up to you. The above tips are solid first steps to success.

Facebook Buys Instagram

Looks like Instagram owners Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger hit a home run when it was announced yesterday that Facebook had purchased them for a cool $1 billion in cash and stock. Not bad for a couple of years worth of work…Yup, in March of 2010 the company received about $500,000 in seed money to get the dang thing going…got an app at the Apple App store and they were on their way. Now literally two years later, they have $1 billion to show for their efforts. Wish I could think of ideas like that.

What a story. In December of 2010, there were one million registered users. By June 2011, they were up to five million users and as of yesterday, there were over 30 million Instagram accounts.

Facebook has committed to keeping the company running as an independent, letting it do “its thing”. I for one am looking forward to seeing what Mark Zuckerberg has planned for the insanely popular brand and how it will influence Facebook in the future. What are your thoughts on this new acquisition?

Job Seekers Being Asked For Facebook Password

What do you think? Is it right that companies are now trying to learn more about you, the personal you, via requiring you to give up your personal Facebook password? Is this the equivalent to asking to see what color underwear you are wearing? Seems a bit over the top to me…

If a good interview team cannot gather enough information to access the “vibe” of a person, I would think re-accessing the interviewing techniques is the way to go. It’s almost like cop out. That’s my opinion. This being said, at this time of year as millions of young college grads are entering the job force, this is an excellent reminder that who you are is displayed by such venues as your social profiles and social interactions on the web. Everything that is up on the web, stays on the web and puts you in a vulnerable position if and only if you put compromising personal imagery or statements up there.

The solution is simple – Don’t put anything on your social profiles that you wouldn’t want your mother to see. An easy rule to live by.

What do you think? Should companies have the legal right to be able to force you to give over your personal social passwords?

A Lesson for the Tech Savvy Multi-Tasker

Woke up at 5am this morning with my laptop left from last night’s late night work practically in my lap. Sure made it easy to access this morning!  This is the first blog that popped up that I chose to read. Funny, isn’t it? I mean if I am not doing six things at any given moment, I am asleep. And even then, I try to cram some thinking into that time period too.

As duly noted in the attached link about “just trying to do one thing at one time” and the magical way your brain will feel better and be better is a simple but now seemingly archaic ideal. Technology has removed the possibility of stopping, breathing deeply and just taking time to pull back and think about one thing into the ‘never never’ world. Simple sounding. In fact, I am visualizing what that may look like myself.

No texting and talking, no driving and calling, no meeting and emailing, just focusing on what is right in front of you. In our world of “expect more and pay less,” this beautiful beach vision of one thing at one time seems like a mirage. You know what? I am going to try it today. I am going to commit to focusing on one item, staying with it and then moving off. I am looking forward to this. Give it a try. You may like it!

Start-Up Video For Success

What’s the big idea to get noticed, to score $1Million dollars with the blink of an eye from deep-pocketed investors? Think VIRAL. This smart entrepreneur had a great idea and needed a way to reach millions of people…. without spending millions of dollars. It’s no secret that new viral marketing ideas are shaking up the way we go about launching products, re inventing brands, telling new stories. Funny, slapstick, easy on the eye while clearly showcasing the product differentiation and benefits, this video will be hit. Follow it on YouTube and see. As of this morning, it has 1,000 views. It has been up less than ten hours. It will grow to millions within days.

The trick here is that the developer never lost sight of his product and goals. He didn’t take himself or his product too seriously and he was able to open his eyes and see the opportunity as opposed to the drawbacks. He didn’t see road blocks. He smelled his own success.

Good old creative muscle coupled with social marketing and razor sharp technology are today’s marketing playground. It’s not always about how much you spend (as demonstrated here) but how much you are willing to open your mind to the possibilities of that exist.

The Future of Outdoor Advertising Through Face Recognition Personalization

Imagine you are standing at a bus stop and your eyes drift to the advertisement on your side. Cameras pick up your line of sight as well as your physical features and begin to show you a customized ad, based off your gender or outfit. On Oxford Street in London’s West End, these interactive outdoor advertisements are reality.

Plan UK, a non-profit organization that helps children in third world countries, has set up a new $30,000 display that will identify woman, with a 90% accuracy rate and display an ad for the education of girls in third-world countries. While the idea behind the ad may be something to debate, the technological implications are something that should be looked into. Now, advertisers will be able to tailor specific messages to a targeted audience. Companies could tag competitor logo to showcase ads of their own. Perhaps it notices an accessory you are wearing and shows you a product that matches. The possibilities are endless!

Starbucks Cup Magic…Feel the augmented reality love

During the holidays the typically chained to their desks (kidding) OTW employees were rushing back and forth to Starbucks purchasing coffee to see if their new cup was the “winner”. The games were captivating and created lots of conversation.

And isn’t that what we all want for our brand? To have folks chatting us up, wanting our products and being part of something that is bigger than they are. It’s a pleasant break from the day.. and Starbucks is doing what they can to be part of your culture… via integration of their product with mobile technology. It looks like they have another winning idea on their hands…

Check out this link to their augmented reality Valentine’s Day program.

Effective Use: Instagram for Business

Instagram has become an incredibly popular social photo sharing application. Launched in October of 2010, Instagram gained 1 million users within its first few months. This past September, Instagram announced that they had exceeded 10 million users – not bad for a mobile application that can only be used on an iPhone (AND has only six employees).

But why should my company care about Instagram? The reason is because customers are everything. The power of Instagram is in the unique interaction brands can have with their customers. It fosters an environment that spreads brand awareness and cultivates relationships with customers. However, Instagram is not like every other social medium. There are a few guidelines that every brand should understand before powering through Instagram as if it were a billboard on I-93. Here are three things that every corporate Instagram account should be aware of:

1) You Are a User Too! – Just like everyone else on Instagram, you are a user. Being a brand doesn’t mean that you get any special treatment. Harness this leveled community! Instagram has built an organic environment of passionate users who understand aesthetics (or think they do). Enjoy being a user!

2) Be Your Culture – Do not post overly branded images that clearly represent an attempted ad – no one will like this. Brands are seeing the most success when they focus on photographing their culture; behind-the-scenes, sneak peeks, office activities, company interests, etc. Have fun with your posts.

3) Post Consistently (and Post Often) – This may seem basic, but it is incredibly important. Nothing is more annoying than someone posting 5-10 photos in a row and then nothing for days. Space it out! Your user engagement will increase with steady, staggered photo posting – allowing followers to digest your post and comment accordingly.

It may seem like there is a never-ending world of social media out there that is hard to keep track of. However, if you focus on the core of each communicative medium and follow the respective guidelines, your company will see a dramatic increase in community interaction.

Old Spice Invades Other’s Commercials

Old Spice who is always going for ridiculous laughs has decided to take it one step further. While it may seem like Old Spice is hijacking that brand’s commercials, they all share the parent company of Procter & Gamble and is a fun way to split the hype between their products. Do you guys think it was a great idea? I personally love it.
